Frost Damage To Lawns
Frost damage to warm season and transition area grasses can be a big problem this spring. St. Augustine, Centipede, Bermuda, Bahia and Zoysia grasses have taken big hits this winter. Despite the “Global Warming” farce, this has been the coldest winter in decades.
Frost is more likely to occur in low-lying areas due to the pooling of cold air close to the ground. Even when the official temperature is above freezing, cold air is pooled in low lying areas and frost damage can occur.
Frost damage can cause blackening, curling and leaf drop of leaves and twigs. In severe cases, frost can result in sudden death of flowers, buds, or grass foliage. In the spring after plants break dormancy, frost damage is often confused with "spray damage" by customers after an application. There are many theories about how frost damage occurs but the most prevailing theory about severe damage causing death to the turf has to do with weight on the frost covered grass causing ice crystals to puncture plant cells. Foot prints or tire tracks that show in the frosted grass often results in dead spots in the lawn.
Symptoms:
Low temperatures can damage turfgrass, by the freezing of the blade grass, which exhibits in yellow maze-like patterns on the green turf.
Most damage caused by frost to hardy plants will recover depending on the quality of the soil it grows in. Soil bio-activity, compaction and organic matter content are the deciding factors. Two of the best products available for soil quality improvement is Humic Acid and Deep Sea Kelp.
